I wasn’t aware at the time, but I became interested in food as medicine when my mother was hospitalized for ulcerative colitis and nearly died. At the hospital, a doctor from Japan doing a residency in the US, went against her primary doctor’s order to remove my 33-year-old mother’s colon, he wanted to save her colon with the use of proper diet, supplements and herbs. And guess what? It worked! Later in life I would remember that when I was struggling with anxiety, insomnia, weight gain, digestive problems and skin issues, I thought, could there be a connection with the food I consume and my health issues? Absolutely. I did consider the connection, however I didn’t make many changes. I just wasn’t ready. Habits are hard to break! When I became a Medical Esthetician and worked with many clients to resolve their skin issues, I came back to food and the mind-body connection. I researched endlessly to find solutions for their skin issues, created a nutrition plan and implemented it with my client and guess what? We got amazing results! Their red, blotchy and aging/acne skin was dewy and youthful. The side effect I wasn’t expecting? My clients not only looked good, but they felt even better with weight loss as an added bonus. I knew then I was on to something. So, I began my tireless research to address my anxiety, insomnia and digestive issues with food, supplements, herbs and exercise. Guess what? It worked! So, I went back to school for 5 years and got two nutrition degrees!
